This Sunday, July 15, the Westfield Annapolis Farmers Market will begin accepting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits (formerly food stamps) as well as debit/credit transactions. This is the only market to accept SNAP in Anne Arundel County for the 2012 season, so please come out and show your support!
The Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation (AAEDC), the Anne Arundel County Department of Health and Human Services, the Southern Maryland Agriculture Development Commission (SMADC), and the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) have partnered to pilot this new program at Westfield Annapolis Farmers Market in an effort to increase access to healthy food, and support local farmers.
Beginning on July 15, market customers will be able to swipe their SNAP benefits card at the market and receive tokens to use with all vendors at the market. Tokens come in $1 (SNAP) and $5 (debit/credit) increments. As of January 2012, there are 38,938 SNAP recipients in Anne Arundel County. Providing SNAP recipients with increased access to healthy fruits and vegetables is important in addressing health and weight issues.
